Ennis Shield Update

Both Bray/Greystones and Round Tower moved above us following their wins in round 9 of the league. Bray defeated Naomh Barróg 3.5-2.5 and Round Tower beat Longford 4-2.  Our match at home to Dublin on Saturday takes on significant importance as we try and cement that promotional spot.

Did Eoin miss a win?

The main topic of conversation before proceedings got underway last night was did Eoin miss a win in 6 moves against Michael Johnston.  Michael seems to think he did and he demonstrated it several time before last night’s Championship matches.  If you were not party to the discussions, why not test yourself and find the key moves? Black to play.

BEA Cup Update

Cillian Howlett’s BRA Cup side move to 3rd place in the league following an eventful 4-1 win against Dublin on Saturday.  With Dublin conceding walk-overs on three boards, it was left to Nick Rottiers on board 1 and Frank Pentony on board 2 to secure 2 draws and maintain an undefeated result in all 5 matches.  Next up is a difficult away match to Finglas on 5th March. However, the team are under no pressure as this win secures their place in the BEA Cup for next season and who knows if a bonus is out there? A series of good results in their remaining matches could put them in contention for promotion.

B Championship Update

Paddy McDonnell will be champion barring an extraordinary series of results. He has a 100% win rate from 6 matches and a clear 2 point lead over his nearest rival. Realistically, only Alan Dee can catch him but he needs to win every match including his match against Paddy.  If Paddy defeats Colm Sommerville in his next match, a draw against Alan will be enough to secure the title.

A Championship Update

Michael Johnston moves to the top of the standings as a result of his win over Paul McDonnell on Tuesday night.  This is a truly amazing feat considering that he played in the C Championship last year.  With one match remaining against defending champion Pat Coleman, he can only dream of success. However, Pat has three matches to play and needs 2 points from 3 matches to retain the title. Don’t rule out a surprise as technically, there are 5 players still in the hunt?

C Championship Update

With just three matches remaining to be played,  Pat Scanlan is Champion, but the runner up spot is still up for grabs. Sonia is in 2nd place at present, with one remaining match against Justin. However, Justin has two matches to play and would pip Sonia if he manages to win both? Andrew is also in the mix but has a difficult last match against the Champion elect, Pat. A few interesting matches to look forward to?
