Results 21st November

It was a night of Shocks, sterling defending and brilliant Chess

Section A:

Pat Scanlan 0-1 Oliver Gaynor.  Oliver declared his intentions early and the loss puts Pat under pressure to qualify for the B Championship.  Oliver is already qualified as he won the ‘C’ Championship last season.

Paul McDonnell 0.5-0.5 Brendan Corrigan.  Paul is not giving up his place in the ‘A’ as he took the game to Brendan. After a lot of ‘huffing and puffing’ a draw was a fair result.  Brendan has alot of work to do to qualify for the ‘A’ Championship.

Section B:

John Doyle 0.5-0.5 Andrew Thomson.  The worst result possible for the qualifies as they both finish level on 2 points but with only one place remaining in the ‘B’ Championship due to Andrew Watson’s superb form. Replay next Tuesday.

Paddy McDonnell 1-0 Martynas Gudauskas. The contender for Shock of the night as Paddy took on the mighty Martynas and inflicted a first defeat of the season.  In a game he needed to take at least a half point, Paddy gives himself a great chance of qualifying for the ‘A’ Championship.  See game details on a separate post.

Section C:

Maurice O’Connor 1-0 Sean Havern. Maurice puts himself in with a good chance of making the ‘B’ Championship?

Adam Churchill 1-0 Sean Cummins. Another contender for Shock-of-the Day, as Adam continued his good form and takes complete control of Section C. A draw in his remaining match against Colm Somerville is all that he may need?

Section D:

James McConville 0-1 Eoin Murphy. Eoin guarantees his place in the ‘A’ championship and puts a dent in James ambition.

Ben Reilly 0-1 Alan Dee. Alan returns to winning form but had to be at his best to defeat a gallant Ben.

Thierry Brearley 1-0 Tom Walsh. Thierry makes it 2/4 with a hard earned win against Tom.

Alan Lynch 0-1 Frank Pentony.  To say it could have gone either way is an understatement, as these guys tore into each other from the outset. In the end it was one error by Alan that gave Frank an opening and he took full advantage!

“The Chinese Evergreen Game”

In the long history of chess there are many games which stand out for their beauty, such as The Immortal Game (Anderssen-Kieseritzky, London 1851) and The Evergressn Game (anderssen-Dufresne, Berlin 1852).
The Following game was played in the Chinese Chess League last week – and some people already call it The Chinese Evergreen Game and The Game of the 21st century.

Bal Jinshi – Ding Liren

Sean wins the Cup

Sean Cummins secured his first piece of silverware when defeating Alan Dee in the Noeleen Thomson Cup Final Replay.  In a close match that almost replicated the original cup final, Sean remained calm throughout and saw the game out.  Following his success in the June Congress, this is his first Club win, but I suspect this is merely the start of the Cummins dynasty!
