June Rapid Results

A very entertaining 6 round 10 min Rapidplay took place in Garvey’s on Thursday last. Top seed Sean Cummins looked to be running away with the tournament with 3 straight wins, against 2nd seed Andrew Watson , 4th seed Thierry Brearley and 5th seed Maurice O’Connor. However, 3rd seed Frank Pentony forgot to read the script and Sean suffered his first and only defeat in round 4. Meanwhile Maurice O’Connor who lost to Sean in Round 1 was busily picking up points and finished in 2nd place on 4.5 points a mere 0.5 point behind Sean. Thierry Brearley and Frank Pentony shared 3rd place. Willie Hurst, Fionn O’Reilly and Gwen O’Reilly were the other participants.

Hers to the next one!

Can chess players multitask?

Round two of our online Swiss takes place at 8pm this evening. However, there is a slightly conflicting Nations League football match being played in Lodz, Poland at 7.45pm, which might distract some of our stronger players? The big question is can they multitask in playing and watching (and maybe drink coffee) at the same time. Chess players are usually flexible and adaptable in tricky positions.

PS you don’t even have the distraction of pressing your clock during online chess. One less task to worry about!

Multitasking during the U21 match against Italy!

REMINDER: AGM on Thursday 16th June

The AGM of Drogheda Chess Club takes place at 8.15 pm on Thursday 16th June 2022 in Garvey’s Bar & restaurant, Scarlet Street, Drogheda.

As we celebrate 75 years in existence, this is a crucial meeting and your attendance is urgently requested.

The AGM will be followed by light refreshments and a simultaneous exhibition match

June22 Swiss Update

Round 1 of our latest online Swiss kicked off on Tuesday night with 10 players competing. The usual suspects were victorious but there were a couple of close calls! ACW1990 (Andrew Watson to you and I) gave PawnStorm96 (Sean Cummins) a bit scare. Fithill (Paul Byrne) more than matched DOBGM (Donal O’Boyle) for much of the game, but DOB’s experience told in the end.

Round Two is at 8pm on Tuesday next and new players can join at any stage.
