Congress Update Round 6

Success for 4 players from the Club following the final round results. As predicted Vladislav Puchkov made it 6/6 with a win over Cathal Keane and secured the Murray Challengers. Thierry Brearley secured a share of 2nd place with a win over one of his rivals Diego Carreira. Andrew Connolly in his first tournament won a grading prize for his 9th place finish. other finishers were Frank Doyle 16th, Ben Reilly 21st, Liam Pentony 28th, and 5 of our younger players who finished in 29-34th positions.

Rordan Fagan finished joint 2nd courtesy of his draw with eventual winner Spence Beckett in the Fox Major. Philip Mitchell, Cillian Howlett and Michael Pentony finished in 27th to 29th positions in a tournament they would rather forget.

Donal O’Boyle and Sean Cummins finished 19th and 20th way below expectations but chess is so unpredictable!

FM Oleg Artemenko from Uzbekistan took the Thomson Masters courtesy of a draw in his final round match against Oisin O’Cuilleanain, as Colm Daly could not get the better of Jason Liu in his final match.

Congress Update Round 5

Mixed fortunes for the local players in the Murray Challengers. Vladislav Puchkov powered to 5 points with a win against Diego Carriera and looks odds on to take the title. Frank Doyle and Thierry Brearley both won and moved within a point of the leader. Unfortunately Tara Turcin and Liam Pentony suffered defeats and dropped out of the reckoning. Ronaldo Ozolins, Shrey Bhardwaj, Pradeep Kumar and Shourya Singh all drew their matches.

The local derby in the Fox Major between Cillian Howlett and Michael Pentony ended all square, but Rordan Fagan continued his good run with a win over Jakob Jagic to remain 0.5 point behind Spence Beckett the leader. Philip Mitchell couldn’t get the better of JJ McNamara in a tough match.

In the O’Boyle Championship, Sean Cummins bad run continued with a loss to Robert Frost and Donal O’Boyle drew with Ollie Sinnott.

The top of the table clash between FM Oles Artemenko and FM Colm Daly ended all square, leaving the title still in the balance. Their nearest challengers Jason Liu and CM Adam Collins drew their match also.
