Last Tuesday, we had our simultaneous display with FM David Fitzsimons who was true to his word of not allowing short draws and seeking to win every game no matter what the position. It all added up to an enjoyable evening where there were many sharp encounters and an opportunity to witness Masterly play at very close quarters, albeit the vast majority witnessing this were on the receiving end. Late call offs reduced the number to 16, but with a body count of 14-2, we can conclude that he came, he saw, and he almost conquered! Not many people have conquered Drogheda since the Vikings were vanquished by Brian Boru, but David could be added to that list now. Gracious as ever, he spoke with all of his opponents at the end of their match., as we all had a memorable evening.
Suffice to say that the club’s strongest players received the shortest shrift, and it was left to the lesser lights to shine. Two heroes emerge from the carnage, Eoin Murphy who had Queen and 2 pawns against a Rook, Bishop and 2 pawns and who himself pushed hard for the win. After much manouvering, Eoin was mated on the kingside which no one saw, particularly Eoin.
Step forward Magic Mike. After being out manoeuvred in the opening and with a wandering king under attack, he somehow emerged with a better position, a piece to the good. He then marched his b pawn to glory eventually….if his entry on facebook is anything to go by. Once in a lifetime.!! Well done Mike.
There was one other result of note involving chief organiser Stefan. Even though the position was drawn, David sought to make good on his intention to win and not accept any draws. However he over-reached in an equal bishop/pawn ending resulting in a loss.
