Andrew Thomson RIP

Its with great sadness that Drogheda Chess Club announce the passing of Andrew Thomson last night. Andrew who was a former President, Congress Controller and team member will be a huge loss to chess nationally as well as locally.

He was responsible for the Wexford Chess Congress from 1971 to 1989. On settling in Drogheda in 1989, he transferred the Congress to Drogheda and this has been a success from then until 2019 when Covid intervened. He was instrumental in securing the Irish Championships for Drogheda in 1999. Andrew introduced the Irish Veterans Championship in 1999 as part of the Irish Championships and he was the first Champion. This Championship continued until 2015. Indeed, many of the trophies were designed and carved by Andrew also.

At local level as well as participating in Leinster League matches and Club activities, he was a coach to St Peters National School and steered them to victory in the Drogheda Schools Chess League on several occasions.

Andrew was also a keen bridge player and a season ticket holder at Fairyhouse.

A true gentleman, the likes of whom we will not see again. Condolences to his sister Nancy, relatives and friends. Funeral arrangements will be published later on RIP.ie
